On April 10, 1912, the RMS Titanic departed from Southampton, England, beginning its maiden voyage to New York City. The ship, operated by the White Star Line, was the largest and most advanced ocean liner of its time.

The Titanic was designed as a symbol of engineering achievement and luxury, featuring state-of-the-art technology and accommodations for passengers across multiple classes. It carried more than 2,200 passengers and crew, including wealthy travellers, immigrants, and ship personnel.

After leaving Southampton, the ship made scheduled stops in Cherbourg, France, and Queenstown (now Cobh), Ireland, before heading across the Atlantic Ocean toward the United States.

The Titanic was widely considered unsinkable due to its advanced safety features, including watertight compartments and remotely activated doors designed to contain flooding. These innovations contributed to public confidence in the vessel’s safety.

However, just days into its voyage, the Titanic struck an iceberg on the night of April 14, 1912. The collision caused catastrophic damage to the hull, leading to the ship’s sinking in the early hours of April 15. More than 1,500 people lost their lives in the disaster.

The sinking of the Titanic led to significant changes in maritime safety regulations, including requirements for sufficient lifeboats, continuous radio monitoring, and improved iceberg detection. The tragedy remains one of the most studied and remembered events in maritime history.

The ship’s departure on April 10 marks the beginning of a voyage that would become a defining moment in early 20th-century history.
