Historical Record — Abdication of the Last Emperor Marked the End of Imperial Rule
By Brad Socha | February 12, 2026 | 8:42 PM EST
On February 12, 1912, Emperor Puyi formally abdicated the throne, ending more than two millennia of imperial rule in China. The abdication followed the 1911 Xinhai Revolution, which led to the establishment of the Republic of China and the collapse of the Qing dynasty. The transition marked one of the most significant political transformations of the early twentieth century.
Key Developments
• The Qing dynasty issued an abdication edict negotiated between imperial officials and revolutionary leaders.
• Yuan Shikai, a military leader, played a central role in arranging the transfer of power.
• The new republic retained certain privileges for the former imperial household, allowing Puyi to remain in the Forbidden City for several years after abdication.
• The event concluded the imperial system that had governed China since the Qin dynasty in 221 BCE.
The Qing dynasty, founded in 1644 by the Manchu-led Aisin-Gioro family, faced internal unrest, economic pressures, and foreign intervention throughout the nineteenth century. Revolutionary movements gained momentum after military uprisings began in Wuchang in October 1911. The abdication on February 12, 1912 formally ended imperial governance and reshaped political structures across East Asia.
Historians widely consider the abdication of 1912 a defining turning point in modern Chinese history. It shifted governance from monarchy to republican institutions and influenced regional political movements throughout the twentieth century.
