NASA’s Space Launch System sends astronauts on historic lunar flyby mission

NASA has successfully launched Artemis II, the first crewed mission of the Artemis program, marking the first time humans have traveled toward the Moon since the Apollo missions more than 50 years ago.

The mission lifted off aboard NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket from Kennedy Space Center, carrying four astronauts on a multi-day journey around the Moon aboard the Orion spacecraft. The launch represents a major milestone in the agency’s long-term goal of returning humans to the lunar surface.

The Artemis II crew includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. Hansen becomes the first Canadian to travel beyond low Earth orbit.

Following launch, Orion successfully separated from the SLS rocket and began its trajectory toward the Moon. The mission is designed to test critical systems required for deep-space human travel, including life support, navigation, communication, and crew safety under real mission conditions.

Artemis II will perform a lunar flyby without landing, travelling thousands of kilometres beyond the Moon before returning to Earth. The mission is expected to last approximately 10 days.

NASA has stated that the success of Artemis II is essential for the next phase of the program, including Artemis III, which aims to land astronauts on the lunar surface and establish a sustainable human presence.

The Artemis program is part of a broader international collaboration involving space agencies and private partners, with long-term ambitions that include future missions to Mars.
