Ground offensive forces Iraqi troops to retreat after seven months of occupation

On February 25, 1991, coalition forces led by the United States entered and liberated Kuwait City, marking a decisive moment in the Gulf War and effectively ending Iraq’s seven-month occupation of Kuwait.
The liberation occurred during the fourth day of the coalition’s ground offensive, known as Operation Desert Storm. Iraqi forces, facing overwhelming military pressure, began retreating north toward Iraq. Coalition troops encountered limited resistance inside Kuwait City as Iraqi units withdrew or surrendered.
Iraq had invaded Kuwait on August 2, 1990, triggering international condemnation and leading to the formation of a broad multinational coalition authorized by the United Nations. The coalition included forces from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and several other nations.
Following the liberation, coalition forces secured critical infrastructure and humanitarian assistance operations began. Fires set at Kuwaiti oil wells during the retreat caused significant environmental damage and required months to contain.
The Gulf War officially ended days later, on February 28, 1991, when a ceasefire was declared. The conflict is frequently cited as a defining example of multinational military coordination under UN authorization and reshaped Middle Eastern security dynamics in the decades that followed.
