Canada’s Wildfires Blanket Cities With Smoke

Smoke from hundreds of active wildfires is degrading air quality across Canada and parts of the United States, highlighting how distant fires can rapidly affect millions of people far beyond the flames.

Smoke from Canada’s wildfire season has once again become a national and international public health concern, with dense plumes spreading hundreds and, in some cases, thousands of kilometres from the fires themselves. On July 15, Toronto temporarily ranked among the world’s worst major cities for air quality as smoke from wildfires in northwestern Ontario drifted into southern Ontario, reducing visibility and prompting health warnings. 

The situation illustrates an increasingly familiar pattern. While wildfires may burn in remote forests, the smoke they generate can travel vast distances through the atmosphere, affecting major population centres far removed from the fire zone. Fine particulate pollution, known as PM2.5, is capable of penetrating deep into the lungs and entering the bloodstream, making wildfire smoke a significant public health issue even for people who never see the flames.

Environment Canada issued air quality warnings across parts of Ontario as smoke spread southward. Forecasts indicated elevated Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) values through much of Wednesday, with officials advising residents to reduce strenuous outdoor activity, particularly those with heart or lung disease, older adults, children, pregnant people and outdoor workers. 

According to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, hundreds of wildfires remain active across the country. Reuters reported that more than 835 fires were burning nationwide, with 112 classified as out of control, and approximately 1.9 million hectares had already burned during the season. Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan continue to experience some of the greatest wildfire activity. 

In northwestern Ontario, several First Nation communities have been forced to evacuate as fires approached populated areas. Canadian National Railway also temporarily halted rail operations near Armstrong after advancing flames threatened transportation infrastructure, demonstrating how wildfire impacts extend well beyond forests into supply chains and critical services. 

Wildfire smoke consists of a complex mixture of gases and microscopic particles created as vegetation burns. The smallest particles, PM2.5, are especially concerning because they bypass many of the body’s natural defenses. Exposure may irritate the eyes, nose and throat, worsen asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), increase cardiovascular stress and, during prolonged events, raise the risk of serious respiratory illness.

Health officials recommend several practical measures during heavy smoke events. Staying indoors with windows closed can reduce exposure when outdoor conditions deteriorate. Running central air conditioning on recirculation mode or using portable air purifiers equipped with HEPA filters can further improve indoor air quality. People who must spend extended periods outdoors during severe smoke may benefit from properly fitted N95 respirators, which filter fine particulate matter more effectively than ordinary cloth masks. 

The effects are not limited to Canada. Smoke from this week’s fires has spread across the Great Lakes region and into the northeastern United States. Air quality alerts have been issued in several American states as atmospheric winds transported Canadian smoke southward, affecting millions of additional residents. 

Scientists note that smoke transport is a normal atmospheric process, but advances in satellite monitoring, weather modelling and air-quality forecasting have greatly improved the ability to predict where smoke will travel. Agencies now combine satellite observations with computer models to provide earlier warnings, allowing health authorities and emergency managers to prepare communities before conditions worsen.

Canada has experienced several severe wildfire seasons in recent years. The record-breaking 2023 season burned more than 18 million hectares and produced smoke that reached Europe and affected air quality across much of North America. While the current season has not yet approached that historic scale, recurring smoke events demonstrate how wildfire impacts are becoming an increasingly important environmental and public health challenge. 

Researchers continue studying the long-term health effects of repeated wildfire smoke exposure, as well as improved methods for forecasting smoke movement and protecting vulnerable populations. Better forest management, expanded early detection systems, improved firefighting resources and continued advances in satellite monitoring are expected to play important roles in reducing future wildfire risks.

For many Canadians, the most visible reminder of the fires is not the flames themselves but the orange skies, reduced visibility and smoky air that can settle over cities hundreds of kilometres away. As another wildfire season unfolds, officials continue urging the public to monitor local air quality forecasts and follow health guidance whenever smoke conditions worsen.
