The first American in space in 1961 marked a turning point in technological competition, national ambition, and the future of exploration. On May 5, 1961, astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American to travel into space aboard the Freedom 7 spacecraft. The legacy of the first American in space continues to influence modern space programs.
