On April 9, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, effectively bringing an end to the American Civil War.
The surrender followed a series of military defeats for Confederate forces, including the fall of Petersburg and Richmond, the Confederate capital. Facing dwindling supplies, exhausted troops, and no viable path to continue fighting, Lee sought terms from Grant.
The meeting between the two generals took place at the home of Wilmer McLean in the village of Appomattox Court House. Grant offered relatively generous terms, allowing Confederate soldiers to return home with their personal belongings and, in many cases, their horses, which were needed for spring planting.
The agreement marked the beginning of the end for the Confederacy, though other Confederate forces formally surrendered in the weeks that followed. The Civil War, which began in 1861, resulted in significant casualties and widespread destruction across the United States.
The conflict was primarily fought over issues including states’ rights and the expansion of slavery. Its conclusion led to the preservation of the United States as a unified nation and set the stage for the abolition of slavery through the Thirteenth Amendment later that year.
The surrender at Appomattox is widely regarded as one of the most significant moments in American history, symbolizing the conclusion of a prolonged and divisive conflict.
