April 8, 563 BC is traditionally observed as the birth date of Siddhartha Gautama, widely known as the Buddha, the founder of Buddhism and a central figure in global spiritual and philosophical history.

According to historical and religious traditions, Siddhartha Gautama was born in Lumbini, located in present-day Nepal, into a royal family. His early life was characterized by privilege, but accounts indicate that exposure to human suffering, including illness, aging, and death, led him to renounce his royal status in search of deeper understanding.

Gautama pursued a path of spiritual inquiry through meditation and ascetic practices before attaining enlightenment under a Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, in present-day India. Following this experience, he became known as the “Buddha,” meaning “the awakened one.”

He spent the remainder of his life teaching a path aimed at overcoming suffering, centered on principles such as the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. These teachings emphasize ethical conduct, mental discipline, and insight into the nature of existence.

Buddhism spread across Asia over the centuries following his death, becoming one of the world’s major religions with diverse traditions and practices. Today, it is followed by hundreds of millions of people globally, influencing philosophy, culture, and approaches to mindfulness and meditation.

The date of April 8 is observed in several traditions as a celebration of the Buddha’s birth, though exact historical dates vary among sources and regions.
