On April 2, 2005, Pope John Paul II, head of the Roman Catholic Church for more than 26 years, died at the Vatican at the age of 84, prompting a global outpouring of mourning and remembrance.
Born Karol Józef Wojtyła in Poland, he became pope in 1978, making history as the first non-Italian pontiff in over four centuries. His papacy spanned a period of significant global change, during which he travelled extensively, visited more than 100 countries, and became one of the most recognizable religious figures in modern history.
Pope John Paul II played a widely recognized role in the decline of communist influence in Eastern Europe, particularly in his native Poland. His support for human rights, religious freedom, and national identity is often cited as a contributing factor in the rise of movements that challenged Soviet-aligned governments during the late stages of the Cold War.
Throughout his leadership, he also emphasized interfaith dialogue, reaching out to leaders of other religions and promoting cooperation across cultural and religious boundaries. His efforts included historic visits to synagogues and mosques, as well as public calls for peace in regions affected by conflict.
Following his death, millions of people gathered in Rome and around the world to pay tribute. His funeral drew one of the largest assemblies of world leaders in modern history, reflecting his broad global influence.
He was later canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 2014, further cementing his legacy as a central figure in contemporary religious and political history.
