Advances in synthetic media are increasing risks around misinformation, identity fraud, and election interference

Artificial intelligence–generated deepfakes are rapidly becoming one of the most significant emerging security concerns, as improvements in machine learning allow highly realistic fake videos, audio recordings, and images to be created with increasing ease.
Deepfakes are produced using advanced AI models that can replicate human faces, voices, and behaviours with a high degree of accuracy. What once required specialised expertise can now be generated using widely available tools, raising concerns about how the technology could be misused at scale.
One of the primary risks associated with deepfakes is the spread of misinformation. Fabricated videos of public figures can be used to create false narratives, manipulate public opinion, or undermine trust in legitimate information. As these synthetic media become more convincing, distinguishing between real and manipulated content is becoming increasingly difficult.
Election interference has become a particular concern. Experts warn that deepfakes could be used to simulate political leaders making false statements, potentially influencing voters or destabilizing democratic processes. Even when identified as false, such content can spread rapidly across digital platforms before corrections are issued.
The technology also poses risks to individuals and organizations through identity fraud and impersonation. Deepfake audio has already been used in cases where attackers mimic executives or officials to authorize financial transactions or gain access to sensitive systems. This raises new challenges for cybersecurity, as traditional verification methods may no longer be sufficient.
Governments and institutions are beginning to respond. Several countries are exploring regulatory frameworks aimed at controlling the misuse of synthetic media, while technology companies are investing in detection tools designed to identify AI-generated content. However, experts note that detection technologies are in a constant race with increasingly sophisticated generation methods.
There are also broader societal implications. The rise of deepfakes contributes to what some analysts describe as a “trust crisis,” where the public becomes uncertain about the authenticity of digital information. This erosion of trust can affect media, institutions, and interpersonal communication.
At the same time, the technology has legitimate uses, including in entertainment, education, and accessibility. However, the challenge for policymakers and technology leaders is balancing innovation with safeguards that prevent misuse.
As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, deepfakes are expected to become more realistic and more widespread, making them a central issue in discussions about technology, security, and the future of information integrity.
