European space and meteorological agencies confirmed continued development of a next-generation polar-orbiting satellite constellation designed to improve atmospheric monitoring and severe weather forecasting.
The system, known as EPS-Sterna, is being developed through cooperation between the European Space Agency (ESA) and EUMETSAT. Officials stated the constellation aims to increase observation frequency over regions with limited coverage, including Arctic routes and parts of the Mediterranean.
The satellites will use microwave sounding instruments to measure atmospheric conditions, supporting forecasting models, maritime safety planning, and climate monitoring. Program documents indicate the project builds on earlier polar weather satellite initiatives and expanding international data-sharing frameworks.
Researchers noted that enhanced observation cadence is expected to improve early warning capabilities for extreme weather events and long-term environmental monitoring programs. No operational launch timeline has been confirmed beyond preliminary planning milestones.
