1628: Vasa Sinks on Its Maiden Voyage

The preserved 17th-century Swedish warship Vasa displayed inside the Vasa Museum in Stockholm.

On August 10, 1628, Sweden’s heavily armed new warship capsized in Stockholm after sailing barely 1,300 metres, only to emerge from the water 333 years later as an extraordinary archaeological time capsule.

On August 10, 1628, the Swedish warship Vasa departed Stockholm on its maiden voyage before crowds gathered along the waterfront. About 20 minutes later, after sailing barely 1,300 metres, a gust of wind caused the top-heavy vessel to heel sharply. Water rushed through its open lower gunports, and the ship sank to the harbour floor.

About 30 people died. Most of those aboard survived because the disaster unfolded close to shore, with boats nearby and many people able to escape from the upper decks and rigging. The ship itself descended largely intact into the cold, brackish waters of Stockholm harbour. 

Vasa had been intended to demonstrate the growing military power of King Gustav II Adolf’s Sweden. Instead, its brief voyage exposed a fundamental problem in the ship’s stability, and created a maritime mystery that engineers, historians and archaeologists would continue examining centuries later.

Vasa Was Built for War

Gustav II Adolf commissioned Vasa in 1625 as Sweden expanded its naval forces during an era of almost continuous warfare. Construction began the following year at the royal shipyard in Stockholm under master shipwright Henrik Hybertsson. The king was fighting Poland-Lithuania and wanted powerful warships capable of advancing Swedish interests around the Baltic. 

Vasa was formidable. When it departed in August 1628, the vessel carried 64 cannons, including 48 bronze 24-pounders. Its heavy armament was distributed across two enclosed gun decks, while elaborate sculptures and decoration projected royal authority. 

But beneath that display of military power was a dangerous imbalance.

The ship’s upper structure was too tall and heavy relative to the comparatively small portion of the hull below the waterline. Its centre of gravity was consequently too high, leaving Vasa unusually vulnerable to wind.

There were warning signs before departure. During the subsequent investigation, testimony revealed that about 30 men had earlier been ordered to run back and forth across the upper deck to make the ship roll. The demonstration was stopped after only a few crossings because the vessel was heeling so severely that those watching feared it might capsize at the quay. 

Yet Vasa still sailed.

On Sunday afternoon, August 10, the ship left its mooring below Stockholm’s Tre Kronor royal castle. Crew members were permitted to bring family members for the first part of the voyage. The guests were expected to leave at Vaxholm before Vasa continued toward the fleet.

Four sails were set and the gunports were open. After an initial gust caused the vessel to heel and recover, a stronger gust struck as Vasa moved through the harbour.

This time, the ship leaned far enough for water to pour through the open gunports on the lower gun deck.

The flooding became unstoppable. Within minutes, Vasa settled on the bottom in about 32 metres of water. 

From Disaster to Archaeological Treasure

An official inquiry began almost immediately. Captain Söfring Hansson was questioned, and a formal commission later examined officers, sailors and shipbuilders. Testimony established that the ship’s instability had been recognized before the voyage, but determining responsibility was considerably more complicated.

Hybertsson, the original designer, had died in 1627. His successors maintained that the vessel had been constructed according to a design approved by the king. The investigation ultimately produced no official punishment. 

Vasa remained underwater as Stockholm changed around it. Salvage divers recovered most of its valuable bronze cannon during the 17th century, but the hull stayed on the harbour floor.

Its preservation proved remarkable. The brackish Baltic environment limited the presence of destructive shipworm, while the harbour’s cold, low-oxygen conditions helped protect the timber. The Vasa Museum estimates that approximately 98 percent of the ship displayed today is original. 

In the 1950s, Swedish engineer and maritime-history enthusiast Anders Franzén began systematically searching Stockholm harbour. On August 25, 1956, his homemade coring device brought up a piece of black oak. Divers later confirmed that a large two-gun-deck warship lay beneath the water. Vasa had been located. 

Raising it became an immense engineering operation. Divers excavated tunnels beneath the hull so cables could be passed underneath. The vessel was gradually lifted and moved into shallower water while specialists prepared it for the final recovery.

On April 24, 1961, Vasa broke the surface after 333 years underwater, an event broadcast to an international audience. 

The archaeological work that followed revealed far more than a warship. Excavators recovered tens of thousands of objects, including tools, clothing and personal possessions, providing an unusually detailed record of everyday life aboard a 17th-century naval vessel. 

Preserving the enormous wooden structure became another long-term scientific challenge. Conservation has continued for decades as researchers monitor chemical changes, structural deformation and the condition of its timbers. 

Today, Vasa stands inside Stockholm’s Vasa Museum, transformed from a spectacular naval failure into one of the most important surviving artifacts of the 17th-century maritime world.

Its story also carries an enduring engineering lesson. Vasa did not sink because of a single mysterious event. Its proportions left it dangerously unstable, and open gunports provided the path through which water entered when the vessel heeled. The warning signs existed before departure, yet the ship sailed anyway.

The result was a maiden voyage measured not in oceans crossed or battles fought, but in roughly 20 minutes and 1,300 metres. What Sweden lost in 1628, however, became something different centuries later: an exceptionally preserved connection to the people, technology and ambitions of the early modern Baltic world.
