On April 8, 1820, the ancient Greek statue known as the Venus de Milo was discovered on the island of Milos in the Aegean Sea. The sculpture is widely regarded as one of the most famous surviving works of classical antiquity.
The statue was found by a local farmer, Yorgos Kentrotas, while excavating near the ruins of an ancient city. French naval officers later became involved in securing the sculpture, which was eventually acquired by France and transported to Paris.
Believed to have been created between 130 and 100 BC, the Venus de Milo is commonly attributed to the sculptor Alexandros of Antioch. The statue is thought to represent Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, though some interpretations have suggested alternative identities.
Carved from marble, the statue stands over two metres tall and is notable for its missing arms, which were lost sometime after its creation. Despite this, the sculpture’s form and composition have made it an enduring symbol of classical art and aesthetic ideals.
Following its arrival in France, the Venus de Milo was placed in the Louvre Museum, where it remains on display. It has since become one of the museum’s most visited and recognized pieces, attracting millions of visitors each year.
The discovery of the statue contributed significantly to European interest in ancient Greek art during the 19th century, reinforcing the influence of classical antiquity on Western culture and artistic traditions.
