International Record — Assembly of Experts confirms succession as regional tensions continue

Iran’s clerical leadership has appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to Iranian state media and international reporting. The decision was made by the Assembly of Experts, the religious body responsible for selecting the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic.

Mojtaba Khamenei, a mid-ranking cleric and the second son of the late leader, had long been considered a potential successor due to his close ties to Iran’s conservative religious establishment and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Despite never holding a formal elected position within Iran’s government, analysts have described him as an influential figure operating behind the scenes within the country’s political and security structures.

The leadership transition comes amid heightened regional tensions. Reports indicate that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei died in February 2026 following military strikes linked to ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. His death marked the end of a leadership period that began in 1989, during which he held ultimate authority over Iran’s military forces, judiciary, state broadcasting, and nuclear policy.

Iran’s selection of Mojtaba Khamenei has drawn international attention in part because it represents a rare instance in which power appears to pass from father to son within the political system established after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, a system originally founded in opposition to hereditary rule.

The transition also occurs at a time when the country faces internal economic pressures, political unrest, and ongoing confrontation with Western governments over nuclear policy and regional security. Analysts note that Mojtaba Khamenei is widely viewed as aligned with hard-line factions within the Iranian political system and closely connected to the IRGC, one of the most powerful institutions in the country.

Iran’s supreme leader holds the highest authority in the Islamic Republic, overseeing the armed forces and setting broad policy direction for the state. The new leadership period is expected to shape Iran’s domestic governance and international relations during a period of significant geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East.
