Global Monitoring Programs and Deflection Technology Aim to Reduce Impact Risk

NASA continues to advance its planetary defence strategy through expanded monitoring programs, international coordination, and the development of asteroid-deflection technology designed to reduce the risk posed by near-Earth objects (NEOs).
The agency’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO) oversees efforts to detect, track, and characterize asteroids and comets whose orbits bring them close to Earth. According to NASA, thousands of near-Earth objects are discovered annually using ground-based telescopes and space-based observatories operated in collaboration with international partners.
One of the most significant milestones in planetary defence came with NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission in 2022. The spacecraft intentionally impacted the asteroid moonlet Dimorphos, successfully altering its orbital period. Scientists confirmed the change through follow-up observations, marking the first real-world demonstration of kinetic impactor technology as a potential method for asteroid deflection.
Looking ahead, NASA is preparing the NEO Surveyor space telescope mission, designed specifically to locate previously undetected asteroids that could pose future threats. Scheduled for launch later this decade, the infrared observatory will scan regions of space difficult to observe from Earth, helping improve early warning capabilities.
Planetary defence initiatives also involve cooperation with organizations such as the European Space Agency (ESA), which is developing the Hera mission to further study the results of the DART impact. These joint programs aim to refine models of asteroid structure, trajectory prediction, and mitigation techniques.
While scientists emphasize that no known asteroid currently poses a significant impact threat to Earth in the foreseeable future, planetary defence programs remain focused on preparedness. Early detection and coordinated response planning are viewed as key tools in managing long-term cosmic hazards.
